The ideal complement for your garden to become a paradise is a house for little birds. To do it, it is enough to have the necessary tools and materials, as well as some tips that we will give you here.
This project is of medium difficulty and you will need a sturdy workbench to work comfortably, plus some basic carpentry skills. At Brycus we help you make your crafts.
Tools• Hammer and screwdriver
• Tape measure, pencil and square
• Hand saw
• Drill and bits
• Measuring tape
• Files and sander
• Weather-resistant wooden board, 15 centimeters wide and 16 millimeters thick
• Fixation nails and 3.5 x 30 mm screws.
• Enamel, wood glue
1. Draw on the wooden board all the pieces that make up the bird house
In this proposal you will cut pieces with the following dimensions:
to. A 38 cm long back wall
b. Two 22 x 26 cm side walls
c. The roof, 18 cm to facilitate good drainage
d. A 23 cm long front wall. Here, there are two options explained in point 3
and. Floor according to detail
F. Support pole or fixing hook for hanging.
2. Cut the pieces, sand and clean the edges of each cut piece
Once you have the pieces drawn on the board, proceed to cut them with the saw. The Brycus tips at this point are for caution when handling the saw and keeping the piece of wood as steady as possible. With the files or the sander clean each cut edge very well.
3. Options for the bird gate
There are two options to allow the entry of the birds.
The first is by opening a hole in the upper part of the front wall of the house. To do this, draw a centered point approximately 18 cm from the upper edge and open a hole with the spade bit. The measurements of the hole will depend on the type of birds you want as visitors. With 4 cm, only the birds will come, while if you open the opening by 15 cm, larger birds can come.
The second option is to cut the front wall about 5 or 10 cm less so that it does not reach the ceiling.
In both cases, you must also make a small hole to place the dowel or support pin, perpendicular to the wall and about 15 cm below, or just to the side, depending on the case, of the entrance opening. The length of the dowel can be 15 cm.
4. Walls and roof
Once you have all the pieces ready, proceed to join them using glue and fastening nails and screws. The nails help to join while the screws complete and guarantee the maximum resistance of the whole.
5. Soil
One recommendation is that the floor is done using a thick, galvanized mesh, framed in wooden rods and fixed in such a way as to allow its removal and cleaning.
6. Finishing and painting
At this point what remains is to varnish the house for a longer duration, and wait for our friends.
