Indian teak offers an elegant, resistant and beautiful wood. However, it is a material that requires periodic care so that its luster does not fade.
In the case of deckchairs, furniture that is usually exposed to insolation and inclement weather, maintenance is even more important if possible. In Brycus tips we recommend you follow the following steps so that your lounger looks perfect.
Usually the first step is to clean the worn layers of protective agents: varnish, wax, protectants, sealants, and others. The objective is to homogenize the surface of the entire piece of furniture to reapply the different layers. In this way we can guarantee that the lounger does not present any vulnerable point.
The removal of the layers is done with sandpaper. It is convenient to have a sander for this, since doing everything with a sandpaper would be tedious and tiring. However, to get some nooks and crannies and get the slats ready it will be necessary to also have a few loose pieces of sandpaper. Points that are impossible to clean with the sander will be done by hand.
Choose the appropriate sandpaper number appropriately. In this step it is important to check what is the acceptable level of roughness for the application of the different protective layers. Some products are only applicable when a fine sandpaper has been passed. Check the containers for any indication.
In any case, before starting to distribute liquids with the brush, it is necessary to remove the dust. If we have an air compressor we can blow any deposit with it. Otherwise, it will be necessary to brush quickly and pass some chamois that retains the dust from sanding well. There should be no dust left, as it would form lumps in later stages of maintenance, giving rise to surface imperfections that not only tarnish the furniture, but also make it more uncomfortable and expose it to possible future deterioration.
If you have already done a good job of removing any trace of dust, then you can start treating the furniture. The first coat consists of a colorless primer. If possible, a brand that offers insecticidal and fungicidal characteristics will be chosen, as in this way we will get rid of undesirable borer beetles, woodworms and molds.
Let the coat dry well before applying the next one. The drying process should not be sped up by placing the lounger in the sun. Quick drying can cause the coat to crack, leaving the wood exposed and spoiling the beautiful appearance of the teak. Therefore, it is preferable that the furniture is dried in the shade, in a place where the temperature is not very high and that has sufficient ventilation (the gases of some DIY liquids can be toxic).
When the primer is properly dried, the primer can be continued. It should be matte so that the gloss does not conflict with the outer varnish layer. This protector is in charge of blocking ultraviolet rays and waterproofing the wood. It is necessary to spread the product evenly so that the entire lounger is properly protected. Then, it must be allowed to dry following the same guidelines indicated above.
Finally it is the turn of the last layer. It will be a varnish chosen to suit the owner. It can be wax compatible or not. It can give color or not. The important thing is that this last layer seals the others, preventing the furniture from receiving damage.
If we follow all the steps of Brycus advice, we will ensure that our lounger is always in its maximum splendor for those days at the pool or relaxing in the garden. A good teak furniture can last a lifetime, it just needs a little pampering.
